5 Ways to Clean Green In Your Home
NC State Housekeeping has long been an adopter of green cleaning techniques in campus buildings. As they discovered, some of the most environmentally-friendly methods of cleaning are also the healthiest for people. Here are a few easy tips you can use in your home:
- Use a HEPA Vacuum
Housekeeping uses vacuums with HEPA (High‐Efficiency Particulate Air) filters that offer superior air quality benefits when compared to conventional vacuums. HEPA filters trap extremely tiny pollutants, which creates a safer and cleaner indoor environment. - Use Microfiber
Make the switch from paper towels to microfiber. NC State Housekeeping staff use these throughout campus and have found them more effective at trapping and removing dust while also reducing paper waste. Simply wash the cloth and reuse. For large dusting jobs, moisten the cloth to prevent dust from being circulated in the air as you clean. Also, be sure to buy several cloths so that you don’t use one cloth in all parts of your home; that can lead to cross-contamination. - Choose Chemicals Wisely
According to Housekeeping staff, a common misconception is that a space must smell like cleaning solution in order to be clean. Persistent chemical smells can be harmful to health. That’s why Housekeeping made the switch to Green Seal-certified cleaning supplies. These supplies have been designed to be healthier for both people and the planet. One resource for exploring the ingredients of consumer cleaning products is the Environmental Working Group. - Avoid Air Fresheners
When possible, fight odors by opening windows or using fans. This reduces the use of chemical air fresheners with ingredients that may be unhealthy. Another alternative is to use high-quality essential oils and a diffuser. - Change Air Filters
This can be one of the simplest contributors to a cleaner, healthier home. Most air filters should be replaced every three months. Set a recurring reminder in your phone so you don’t forget. Portable air purifiers can also help reduce indoor air pollution levels.
