Certify Your Campus Lab for Sustainability
The University Sustainability Office, in collaboration with Energy Management, Waste Reduction and Recycling and Environmental Health and Safety, has launched a Sustainable Lab certification program for campus lab spaces.
The Sustainable Labs program aims to reduce energy consumption, minimize waste, conserve water and enhance lab safety. Launched as a pilot in January 2024, the program aligns with NC State’s core value of sustainability by promoting responsible resource management and environmentally sound operations.
Currently, five campus labs have been certified sustainable as part of the pilot program, including the Biotechnology Program Teaching Lab, the Laboratory of Soft Materials and Green Chemistry, the Whitehill Lab – Christmas Tree Genetics, the Buchler Lab and the Cognitive Behavioral Lab.
Every campus lab can be a sustainable lab. The Sustainable Labs program provides a clear pathway for labs to receive certification through the following steps:
- Take the REPORTER Course, Sustainable Labs Certification
- Review the Sustainable Labs Guidelines
- Review and complete the Sustainable Labs Checklist
For more information, a virtual information session will be hosted during NC State Energy Week on October 3 at 12 p.m. A second virtual session will also be presented October 22 in collaboration with NC State Surplus.
