Innovation Meets the Ocean: Create Solutions That Matter

MEA 493/591: Interdisciplinary Innovation in the Blue Economy is a hands-on, project-based course offered Fall 2025 that engages students in developing real-world solutions to sustainability challenges facing our oceans and coasts.
Open to all NC State students with sophomore standing or higher, the course brings together interdisciplinary teams to apply STEM knowledge, systems thinking and innovation strategies to projects focused on real coastal and ocean challenges. Students will also engage with industry professionals, researchers and community stakeholders.
The course includes a field trip to the North Carolina coast for hands-on learning at no cost to students.
Course highlights include:

- A final project that can enhance job or graduate school applications
- No prerequisites required
“There’s no better way to learn about the blue economy than by actually engaging in it,” says Professor Chris Osburn, who leads the course and directs the Blue Economy Innovation Program. “This class offers a rare chance to develop real solutions for the coast—solutions that blend science, creativity and innovation.”
