Save Energy This Winter at NC State
During the 2024 winter break, NC State will implement its annual Holiday Energy Savings Initiative (HESI) to reduce energy consumption across campus. Led by Energy Management, HESI has helped the university avoid over $6 million in energy expenses since its implementation in 2005.
NC State will begin lowering temperatures in unoccupied classrooms and teaching labs on Dec. 12 once final exams are finished. Then, while the university is closed for winter break Dec. 24, 2024, to Jan. 1, 2025, Buildings Maintenance and Operations will carry out further conservation measures. These will include lowering temperatures in unoccupied buildings, turning off unnecessary lights and equipment and ensuring doors and windows are properly closed to reduce energy use.
Actions for Campus Faculty, Staff and Students
To maximize energy savings this winter, the Wolfpack community is encouraged to follow these steps to further support the Holiday Energy Savings Initiative:
- Unplug electronics: Turn off and unplug electronics such as computers, printers, coffee machines and mini-fridges.
- In labs: Close fume hood sashes and power down non-essential lab equipment.
- Close windows and doors: Ensure all windows and doors are closed. Any issues with windows or doors should be reported to the Facilities Customer Service Center.
- Turn off lights: Switch off lights in rooms and spaces not in use.
- Report leaks: Report any leaky faucets or plumbing issues to avoid water wastage or potential flooding.
Please note that research labs, animal facilities and certain specialized spaces are exempt from temperature adjustments. For questions regarding the Holiday Energy Saving Initiative, contact Energy Management at save_energy@ncsu.edu or visit go.ncsu.edu/HESI.
