Sustainability at NC State is driven by leaders and partners across the university and community.
NC State University is a leader in sustainability and a frequent recipient of local, regional and national sustainability honors, including the 2022 achievement of a Gold rating in the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS).
NC State’s sustainability impact is driven by a dedicated team of leaders and partners, integrating sustainable practices across all facets of the university.
NC State Sustainability Council
Campus sustainability progress was catalyzed by the university’s Sustainability Strategic Plan, led by the university-wide Sustainability Council with support from the University Sustainability Office. Established in September 2015, the Sustainability Council is charged with:
- Serving as the advisory committee to the Provost and the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration on sustainability.
- Advancing sustainability coordination, collaboration and communication across NC State and bringing together sustainability leaders to vision and guide university sustainability efforts.
- Enhancing participatory decision-making and involvement in sustainability planning and activities.
- Infusing sustainability into academic curricula across the university.
- Identifying priorities and goals for advancing NC State’s embodiment of sustainability as a core value, including development and implementation of an updated Sustainability Strategic Plan

Student Leadership
At NC State University, students are at the forefront of sustainability efforts. They play a crucial role in driving change and inspiring the entire campus community. Here are some student leaders and efforts that are making an impact:
- The Sustainability Stewards, the university’s sustainability student leadership program, engage their peers through workshops and programs
- The Sustainability Fund Advisory Board awards grants from the student Sustainability Fund to create high-impact experiences and advance campus sustainability
- EcoVillage Living and Learning Village houses students in a community to actively explore campus and community sustainability
From renewable energy installations to campus garden projects, students are taking the initiative to create and implement sustainable solutions on campus. NC State student leaders exemplify the spirit of innovation and commitment that enables them to solve global challenges now and in the future.
