Integrate Sustainability In Teaching

82% of NC State students think it is important for NC State to be a leader in sustainability, and 69% of incoming students in 2015 indicated the university’s sustainability commitment as an influencer to attend NC State.

By integrating sustainability in teaching, you can promote sustainability understanding, focus on solutions and practice being a positive agent of change:

  • Identify social, environmental and/or economic sustainability issues (e.g. energy, food, water, economics, etc.) and develop a course module, assignment or project to engage students on how to address the issue(s).
  • Use local environment or data to help build real-world interdisciplinary knowledge. For example, you can connect justice to sustainability for a platform to discuss environmental justice, risk management or ethical issues.
  • Make sustainability learning interactive. You can move from analysis to action by integrating a civic engagement component where students can contribute to creating a more sustainable future using the core concepts from the course.

The Office of Faculty Development hosts a Sustainability in Teaching and Practice Academy and will be updating that webpage with more resources.
