Giving Campus Trees a Second Life
The Campus Urban Wood Utilization Program transforms trees removed from NC State’s campus into valuable educational resources. Through this student-centered sustainability initiative, wood from campus trees is salvaged, processed and reinvested into academic courses and hands-on learning environments.
Led by Landscape Maintenance and Operations, the program connects campus operations with students to demonstrate how sustainability can be integrated into everyday university practices.
From Campus Tree to Classroom
Many of the trees selected for salvage have been part of NC State’s landscape for generations. They have provided shade, beauty and ecological benefits while helping shape the character of campus.
Through this program, those trees continue their story.
Selected trees are removed from campus due to age, decline, storm damage or development needs. While necessary for public safety and campus operations, these removals also present an opportunity to recover valuable materials.
Rather than becoming waste, selected trees are milled into usable lumber for future campus projects. Along the way, students participate in the entire process, from tree removal and material recovery to fabrication and finished products.
Learning Through Real-World Sustainability
The program turns campus-generated wood into a living learning resource. Through the Campus Urban Wood Utilization Program, students connect sustainability concepts to visible, place-based outcomes, including:
- Circular economy principles
- Sustainable material management
- Responsible production practices
- Design and fabrication processes
Unlike many urban wood initiatives that focus on commercial products, this program prioritizes education and student learning. By embedding salvaged wood directly into coursework and creative practice, the program transforms an operational byproduct into a meaningful educational asset.
The result is a scalable model that aligns sustainability with NC State’s core mission of teaching, research and engagement.
