How to Host a More Sustainable Summer Cookout

Summer cookouts are a great way to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. Try these simple and sustainable tips to reduce your environmental impact.

1. Ditch Disposables
Reduce waste by swapping single-use plates, cups and utensils for real dishes and cloth napkins. Compostable or recyclable options can also cut down on waste.

2. Proactive Planning
Shop local farmers’ markets for seasonal produce that’s fresh and supports local growers. Plan your menu to match your guest count and reduce food waste. You could also encourage guests to bring reusable containers for leftovers they may want to take home.

3. Hydrate Sustainably
Set up a refill station using pitchers or a large drink dispenser instead of single-use water bottles. Invite guests to bring their own reusable bottle or cup.

4. Sort It Out
Set up clearly labeled bins for compost, recycling and landfill. NC State’s Recycling Guide can help you figure out where items belong.

5. Decorate with Reusables or Nature
Skip balloons or single-use décor and try potted plants, fresh flowers or reusable decorations.

6. Stay Cool
Host your cookout in the shade, under a tent or later in the evening to cut down on energy use while keeping guests comfortable naturally.

7. Share the Why
Let guests know why you’re making sustainable choices. Your actions could inspire others to rethink their next gathering.
