New EV Charging Stations Open on Campus
NC State Transportation is excited to announce a significant advancement in its commitment to supporting the clean energy transition.
In 2016 and 2017, Volkswagen settled with the Environmental Protection Agency over allegations that it had violated the Clean Air Act. The settlement required $2 billion to be invested in zero-emission vehicle infrastructure. The State of North Carolina received $1 million in settlement as part of the Phase 2, Level 2 State Agency funding, and NC State was granted $144,000 to expand the number of charging stations on campus.
With these funds, the university has added ten electric vehicle charging stations, doubling the available stations. We have now expanded the number of charging stations at the Coliseum and Oval West Deck from one to five and at the Dan Allen Deck from one to three.
This growth strategically meets the increased demand on North, Central, and Centennial Campuses, where EV usage has surged. Over the past year alone, users have risen by more than 30%, making it increasingly difficult to find an available charging port at peak hours.
These transportation-managed EV charging stations are open to campus affiliates and visitors. NC State parking permit holders and WolfTrails members can use discounted rates. Additionally, a new fare structure has been introduced to make overnight charging more convenient and affordable, addressing the rising demand among campus residents and those living nearby.
