The world’s frog population is disappearing and yet many of us know little about these amphibians’ risk for extinction. A traveling art exhibition coming to NC State in February 2016 aims to change that, using art as a medium to communicate this environmental issue.
From February 1 through March 3, 2016, NC State’s Crafts Center will host the Disappearing Frogs Project, a regional effort that uses interactive art installations to raise awareness of the global decline and disappearance of frogs and other amphibians. In addition to the Crafts Center, art will also be displayed in Talley Student Union.
A recent study highlighted in the Washington Post cited the disappearance of about 200 frog species — mostly since 1970 — with the possibility of losing nearly 7 percent of frogs in the next century. Among the causes for the surge are the vulnerability of frogs to environmental factors, such as disease, invasive species and habitat loss.
Artists and art students (ages 14 and older) are eligible to submit entries in a variety of mediums through January 18. Submissions are donated to the Disappearing Frogs Project traveling exhibit and 100 percent of sales support the Amphibian Survival Alliance. Learn more at https://crafts.arts.ncsu.edu/.
