How to Eat Local Without Leaving NC State’s Campus

Eating local has never been easier if you’re an NC State student, staff or faculty.  Here are ways to eat delicious, local food without leaving campus.

Fresh produce delivered to your door step

There are multiple home delivery companies in the area that will deliver locally-grown produce weekly. Can it get easier than that?

Farmers on campus

Did you know every Wednesday during the fall and spring semester that NC State hosts a Campus Farmers Market in the Brickyard? This is a convenient way to pick up your favorite fruits and veggies between classes. That’s super easy. If you’re on Centennial Campus, the State Farmer’s Market is closer and features lots of variety and longer hours.

Grow your own

Rent a plot from the SOUL Garden and you can grow your own produce right next to Lake Raleigh.  Or, if you just want a few herbs that you don’t have to travel to tend, make a container garden in your residence hall room or apartment. Bonus: no deer or other wildlife will gobble up the fruits of your labor (though we make no guarantees that your roommate won’t).

Eat on campus

Nearly one-third of food served in campus dining halls is locally sourced.  Just check the chalkboards in the dining halls for details on where your food came from and whether it was grown by NC State alumni. University Dining also features campus-grown food, including produce from the campus Agroecology Education Farm and a small roof side container garden on Centennial Campus.

Food Trucks

University Dining has partnered with many local food trucks to bring fresh, yummy local food to campus.  You won’t want to miss out on these vendors so check out the food truck schedule.

Howling Cow

Last but not least, our tasty dairy favorite. Looking for an excuse to eat ice cream?  For the freshest, local ice cream look no further than Howling Cow, which is made right here on campus with milk and cream from cows at NC State’s farm. You can’t buy it anywhere but on campus, including campus dining halls, which also feature Howling Cow milk.
