3 Easy Ways You Can Keep Waterways Cleaner

When it rains and you see gallons of rainwater gushing down a storm drain, thatā€™s flowing to local waterways. That runoff takes a lot of ground-level pollutants with it ā€“ pet waste, fertilizer, pesticides, litter, chemicals and more ā€“ and this is bad for aquatic wildlife and water quality. So to ensure that we drink clean water from healthier waterways, try these three simple tips:

Donā€™t litter. Litter often moves because of rain, and a lot ends up near or in waterways. Ā So find a trashcan or recycling bin for your discarded material, and if you see litter on the ground, pick it up and toss it in a nearby trashcan or recycling bin.

Properly dispose of medicines. Remember the news a few years back about public water supplies that had traces of pharmaceuticals? Donā€™t dump medicines down the drain, where they can end up in our water supply. Instead, ask if your pharmacy has a disposal program or look for community ā€œtake backā€ events that give you the opportunity to dispose of medicines responsibly.

Fix fluid leaks fast. If fluid is dripping from your car, ask a mechanic about it. It could be motor oil or some other vital fluid. Not only could these leaks leave you stranded if your car breaks down, but it collects on roadways and in parking lots where rainfall washes it into local waterways.

We all rely on water to live healthy lives, so do your part to keep your local waterways clean.
