You won’t believe the recycled and repurposed material NC State College of Textiles students used to create garments in the inaugural Renew Fashion Challenge competition held as part of Earth Month at NC State.

Sponsored by the University Sustainability Office and the College of Textiles Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management, the competition challenged students in fashion design to create a garment out of repurposed, reused or recycled materials.

The winning entries included dress designs made from plastic bags, a recycled chemistry workbook and jacquard loom waste.

“It was rewarding to work with the future leaders in sustainable fashion and see how waste can be turned into a unique and functional garment,” said College of Textiles student Jon Millner, who coordinated the competition.
