Michael is a graduate of Guilford College, where he earned his B.A. in Business Management. He earned his M.A.T. in Business Information and Technologies Education at East Carolina University. He is currently working towards his Ph.D. in Technology Education at NC State University.

Michael is an energy fellow with the North Carolina Solar Center. He is currently the Program Coordinator for the Sustainable Transportation Education Program (STEP). STEP is an education program where middle and high school students design and build 1/10 scale electric vehicles and solar charging stations to compete at a state competition.
