Fun Ways to Get Moving This Summer

Chances are a more sustainable you would also be a more active you since we now know how vital non-sedentary movement is to health. Of course, that’s easier said than done if you’re one of the millions of Americans who has trouble finding motivation or time to get moving. With the weather warmer, it might be the perfect time to set some sports goals that will help ensure you exercise. Be sure you visit your doctor first to make sure you’re healthy enough to try some of the ideas below.

Sign up for a race

Whether it’s a 5k, half marathon, obstacle race or triathlon, signing up for a race is sure-fire motivation. Once you pay the registration fee and know what date you’re working toward, it’s a lot easier to find the motivation to exercise. Pick a race, sign up and get ready to get moving.

Join a rec team

When your teammates are depending on you, it’s great motivation to do your best. A weekly soccer game or volleyball match gets you moving, and you might find yourself wanting to practice on other days so that you’re at your best on game day. Even if you don’t want to join a formal league, try organizing pick up games among your friends or coworkers.

Make a hiking or walking date

You might be inclined to skip a scheduled walk or hike if it’s just you; add a friend and you’re much less likely to change your plans. Find a friend or family member who shares similar fitness goals and schedule a standing weekly (or daily) time to exercise together. Whether you run, walk or hike, you’ll be getting more enjoyable exercise because you’re doing it together. Make your time even more sustainable by picking up litter as you walk; you’ll be making the trail more beautiful for the next walker or jogger.

Take dance lessons

Dancing is one of those activities that you burn calories without realizing it. If dancing is something you’ve always wanted to try, sign up for a local class or take a Zumba class at the gym.

Row, row, row your boat

Kayaking and canoeing are big calorie-burners, so find a way to get on the water. Often parks will have kayak or canoe rentals for a reasonable price. Sure, the rowing machine at the gym is a good workout, but it doesn’t have nearly the appeal as floating down a local waterway.

Garden

When you exercise your green thumb, your whole body gets the benefit. Gardening builds strength, flexibility and endurance all while you tend to the produce that will one day be the fruits (and vegetables) of your labor.
