Centennial E-Cycling Event

NC State will host the 4th annual Fall electronics recycling collection day, Monday, November 15, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Centennial Campus, on the corner of Partners Way and Main Campus Drive. The event is a collaborative effort of NC State Waste Reduction and Recycling (WRR) and Synergy Recycling.

This free E-cycling event will be open to students, staff, faculty and the general public and will help raise awareness on the toxicity electronics pose in landfills. The Environmental Protection Agency reports toxins like lead, mercury and cadmium can cause harm when leaked into groundwater. Resources from electronics should be reused or recycled once they have reached the end of their initial useful life.

“The first choice for outdated electronics is to re-use or donate these items; if the electronics are no longer operational then recycling them at an environmentally reputable company is your next best choice,” said Analis Fulghum, Education and Outreach Coordinator for WRR. This event is for personal items only. All University property must go to Surplus Materials Management for re-use or recycling.

Materials accepted: All electronics, small appliances, cell phones, cords and batteries will be accepted. Televisions will have a five dollar charge to cover associated handling costs.

Volunteers are needed to help with the collection of materials. Contact the Waste reduction and Recycling office at recycling@ncsu.edu if you or your campus group would like to help.
